Michigan State Police are investigating a shooting and assault that happened in a moving vehicle on Interstate 96, officials said Friday.
The incident happened about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, they said.
The victim, a 30-year-old Detroit man, had stopped at a gas station on the corner of Clark and Fort streets in southwest Detroit, according to authorities.
He told state police troopers that another man approached him and offered to fill up his car's gas tank and give him $100 if he would drive him to another location, officials said.
The victim agreed and the two got into his vehicle and started traveling west on I-96, they said.
As the vehicle approached Grand Boulevard, about five miles from the gas station, the passenger started "speaking in tongues" before he reached over and tried to steer the vehicle into a car next to them, police said.
The driver and passenger struggled for control of the car, according to officials.
The driver, a concealed pistol license holder, drew one of his two weapons and fired at the passenger, authorities said.
The passenger grabbed hold of the weapon and made it inoperable. At the same time, the driver struggled to maintain control of the car. He tried to fire additional shots but the gun still wasn't operating, they also said.
Police said the suspect jumped out of the vehicle with the driver's weapon.
The driver exited the freeway and called 911, officials said.
Later, Detroit Police officers arrested the suspect, a 34-year-old Detroit man, after they responded to a report of a man breaking into a van at a church. Police found him with a gunshot wound to the arm.
After taking him to a hospital for treatment, investigators interviewed the suspect and he told them where the victim's gun was located, police said. Using a canine unit, state police troopers recovered the weapon, they said.
The suspect will be lodged at the Detroit Detention Center once he's released from the hospital and state police will present their case to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office for review, officials said.
