Kids get a meal, and a lesson in black history

Aa

Patrick Coleman, managing partner of Beans and Cornbread in Southfield, created History in a Box packages to educate patrons about African-American trailblazers, ranging from Satchel Paige to the Freedom Riders.

On Tuesday, Coleman treated 60 youngsters to History in a Box meals and taught them black history lessons at Central Detroit Christian Community Development Corporation on Taylor in Detroit.

When he designed the boxes, Coleman wanted to emulate the shoeboxes that African Americans used to carry food during the segregation era.

The soul food restaurant is donating 10 percent of each History in a Box lunch sale to the nonprofit agency to support its youth education programs.
